Module 1 – The Social Dimension of Learning Disability.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Introduce some common causes of learning disability and significant associated conditions including epilepsy and cerebral palsy.

LO2

Analyse the social impact of learning disability on the family.

LO3 Describe the significance of sibling rivalry in relation to learning disability.
LO4 Analyse the language of disability.
LO5 Demonstrate the impact of disability on the individual’s life chances.
 

Module 2 – The History and Development of Services for People With a Learning Disability.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Explore the history of care of people with learning disabilities.

LO2

Describe how this relates to the prevailing attitudes of the time.

LO3 Describe the impact of institutionalisation on individual development.
LO4 Explain the current structure of care provision.
LO5 Explain the significance of the mixed economy of care.
 
Module 3 – Normalisation.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Identify what is meant by the term ‘normalisation’.

LO2

Explain the origin of the concept and its early implications for institutional care.

LO3

Evaluate normalisation as a principle for practice, and discuss its role in the move to community care for learning disability.

Identify the impact of unconscious prejudice on the development of human services.

Explain the concept of a conservative corollary to the principle of normalisation and its importance.

LO6

Identify key accomplishments that services should try to achieve on behalf of users and apply this to an individual case study.

Evaluate the process of audit for the care environment in relation to the quality of care and the promotion of a ‘normal’ lifestyle.

 

Module 4 – Teaching Skills.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Module 5 – Sexuality.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Evaluate the impact of learning disability on the development and expression of sexuality..

Identify some common social attitudes towards the sexuality of people with a learning disability.

Analyse the important areas of carer support with respect to sexuality in people with a learning disability.

Describe the legal rights of the person with learning disability, with particular reference to fertility, marriage and pregnancy.

 

Module 6 – Management of Challenging Behaviour.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Describe a range of possible causes of challenging behaviour in people with a learning disability.

LO3 Explore the integrated functioning of the individual in terms of a theoretical framework of their physical, intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual dimensions.

Identify the social implications of challenging behaviour upon the person with a learning disability.

Describe a behaviourist, therapeutic approach to challenging behaviour, using the behavioural analysis (ABC) chart.
