Learning Outcomes

 

Module 1 – Safety, Material and Small Tools.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

  Learning Outcome
LO1 Explain why flex tapes are popular measuring instruments and introduce other
ways they can be used.
LO2

Identify the importance of workshop uniform/protective clothing and describe acceptable working conditions.

LO3 Define the four attributes of wood and show the name the different hardwoods and softwoods.
LO4 Describe a Particle board giving its advantages and disadvantages.
 

Module 2 – Sawing and Planing.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

LO1

Explain the terms ‘crowning’ and ‘tensioning’.

LO2 Describe the following types of saws:
Rip saw
Back saw
Dovetail saw
 
Module 3 – Small Tools.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:
  Learning Outcome
LO1

Discuss the following chisels showing what they are best used for:
The Firmer chisel
The bevelled-edge firmer chisel
The paring chisel
The all-steel wood chisel

LO2 Summarise how a file is used and the manner in which they should be cared for.
LO3

Investigate rules to follow when drilling.

 

Module 4 – Hammers, Screwdrivers and Miscellaneous Accessories.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

LO1

Examine the following hammers and state the purpose for which they are used:
The claw hammer
The tack hammer
A mallet

LO2

Describe the characteristics of three types of adhesive that could be used in a woodwork shop.

LO3 Introduce the various types of sandpaper that can be used to finish off a project and state the use of each type of sandpaper.
 

Module 5 – Joints and Projects.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Discuss the method of making a butt joint using dowels for reinforcement.

LO2

Explain how mitre joints are formed, their purpose and how they can be reinforced.
