Module 1 – Stakeholders and Their Influence.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

  Learning Outcome
LO1

Identify stakeholders in mental health (people or groups with an interest in defining and/or responding to people with mental health problems) and describe their influence.

LO2

Describe how different stakeholders influence perceptions of mental ill health and how we respond to people with mental health problems.

LO3 Identify how my own understanding of mental health has developed.
LO4 Describe the effects of stigma and discrimination on people with mental health problems.
LO5 Describe how groups already subject to discrimination may be doubly discriminated against in the mental health system.
LO6 Describe the dominant western psychiatric system of classification and critically evaluate it in terms of anti-oppressive practice.
 

Module 2 – Understanding Models of Mental Ill Health.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Describe various concepts of mental health and mental ill health.

LO2

Describe and critically evaluate the major models of mental health and their value bases.

LO3 Reflect on the usefulness of these models for working with service users and their families.
LO4 Describe and evaluate research into the causes of mental ill health.
LO5 Describe Marius Romme's research into 'hearing voices' and practice issues arising from it.
 
Module 3 – Mental Health Policy and Legislation.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Describe the influences on the historical development of mental health law and policy.

LO2

Describe and critically evaluate trends in current law and policy.

LO3

Discuss the major themes in the government guidance, "Modernising the Care Programme Approach" and the implications for practice.

LO4

Discuss the tension between 'care and control' in current legislation and guidance.

 

Module 4 – Social Work in Community Mental Health Terms.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

LO1

Describe the influences on the development of Community Mental Health Teams, including the process of hospital closure.

LO2

Describe the political, organisational and professional issues which impact on the effectiveness of multi-disciplinary teams in delivering services to people with mental health problems.

LO3 Discuss the role of social workers in multi-disciplinary teams.
LO4 Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of abandoning discrete professions and creating 'generic' mental health workers.
 

Module 5 – Treatments and Interventions.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

LO1

Describe a range of physical, psychological and social interventions in mental health and discuss their advantages and disadvantages.

LO2

Explain the concept of Social Role Valorisation and discuss its advantages and disadvantages in delivering services to people with mental health problems.

 

Module 6 – Service User Participation.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Describe the development of the service user movement in Britain.

LO2

Describe the focus on service user and carer participation in government guidance and discuss its effectiveness in practice.

Describe different forms of advocacy for people with mental health problems and discuss the effectiveness of social workers as advocates.
