Module 1 – Course Introduction – Philosophy and Design.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Introduce and discuss the philosophy and design of counselling

LO2   Summarise the following:
  • Eclecticism
  • Integration
LO3   Analyse how a psycho-social tradition is perceived
LO4   Evaluate what is represented by psycho-social approach
 

Module 2 - Effective Communication.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Discuss your understanding of communication giving its categories and purposes

LO2   Examine what communication is used for
LO3   Analyse the two areas of communication
LO4   Explain when you would use empathy
 

Module 3 - Motivational Interview and Dynamics of Recovery.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Examine processes to assist your client in decision making and effecting changes in his life

LO2   Discuss the contemplation stage
LO3   Summarise your understanding of the term ‘relapse’
 

Module 4 - Dealing with Denial.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Describe the various aspects of denial and show how it manifests itself

LO2   List the different levels in Valliant’s hierarchy of defences
LO3   Discuss the purpose of denial
LO4   Identify the appropriate time to use hard confrontation
 

Module 5 - Working with the Family.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

LO1 Analyse the role that family members play in the counselling process
LO2   Discuss how the absence of the “key member” can be beneficial in a counselling session
LO3   Identify three types of “joining”
 

Module 6 - Marital Counselling.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Discuss marital counselling and show the importance of communication

LO2   Define the causes of marital crises
LO3   Evaluate what is achieved by the giving and receiving of feedback
