Module 1 – Fashion Awareness.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

  Learning Outcome
LO1

Introduce and discuss the different aspects of fashion

LO2   Examine the following colour groups:
  • Jewel
  • Pastels
  • Neutrals
  • Classics
  • Earth
LO3   Discuss how the body shape is influenced by different style lines
LO4   Summarise how you would take body measurements
 

Module 2 - Patterns.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

  Learning Outcome
LO1

Discuss the various types of patterns available and the process of selection

LO2   Explain how a commercial pattern differs from a trace pattern
LO3   Summarise how pattern markings assist in the cutting and making of clothing
LO4   Describe how you would select a suitable sewing pattern
 

Module 3 - Fibres in Common Use.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Evaluate the fibres most commonly used in dressmaking

LO2   Examine the benefits of cotton clothing
LO3   List and describe the various man-made fibres
 

Module 4 - Tools & Equipment.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Analyse the smaller tools and larger equipment that are necessary in fashion design

LO2   List the essential tools required in dressmaking
LO3   Summarise when you would use an overlocker sewing machine
LO4   Describe your understanding of the term ‘haberdashery’
 

Module 5 - Lays.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

  Learning Outcome
LO1 Discuss laying and cutting fabric, marking-up techniques, shaping, gathers and seams
LO2   Explain the function of a ‘lay’
LO3   Summarise the use of darts on a garment
LO4   Identify the various seams and explain under what circumstances they would be used
 

Module 6 - Lined Bodices.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

LO1

Summarise your understanding of facings, collars, cuffs and pockets

LO2   Explain why facings are necessary on a garment
LO3   Describe the following types of collars:
  • Flat
  • Mandarin
  • Peter Pan
LO4   Discuss the method you would use to attach a straight cuff to a piece of clothing
 

Module 7 - Closings & Fastenings.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Examine the different types of fasteners and discuss how buttonholes, sleeves, waistbands and hems finish off a garment

LO2   Introduce and discuss the various types of buttonholes
LO3   Describe the following sleeves:
  • Raglan
  • Epaulet
  • Dolman
  • Bishops
  • Dropped
  • Kimono
 
Module 8 - Fabric Layout.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:
  Learning Outcome
LO1 Summarise the importance of layout, cutting and stitching and explain the use of yokes and vents
LO2   Introduce and discuss the advantages of stretch sewing and overlocking
LO3   Discuss for what purpose you would use stretch sewing
LO4   Explain the purpose of a rolled hem attachment
 
Module 9 - Fashion Awareness II.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:
  Learning Outcome
LO1 Describe various body shapes, planning a wardrobe and the importance of makeup, hairstyles and accessories
LO2   List the 8 different body shapes
LO3   Summarise what comprises a foundation wardrobe
LO4   List the articles calculated to be the main accessories in fashion
 
Module 10 - Introduction to Fashion Drawing.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:
  Learning Outcome
LO1 Examine presentation, techniques of fashion drawing and summarise ideas on designing
LO2   Summarise when the following media would be used to enhance designs:
  • Lead pencils
  • Pen and ink
LO3   Discuss the drawback of working with using marker pens or ink
LO4   Examine the significance of layout in dressmaking
