Module 1 - The Skeletal System.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Identify four types of bones and indicate where they can be found.

LO2 Describe the structure of the bones.
LO3

Summarise functions of the vertebral column and name and number the vertebrae.

LO4 Explain the function of the osteoblasts and of a foramen.
 

Module 2 - The Muscular System.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

LO1

Introduce the three types of muscle found in the human body and the function performed by each type.

LO2 Discuss the term ‘origin and insertion of a muscle’.
LO3

Summarise ‘cramp’ and define your understanding of ‘goose pimples’.

 

Module 3 - The Nervous System.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

LO1

Identify the three layers covering the brain and give functions of the cerebrospinal fluid.

LO2 Discuss the lobes and describe the functions of the cerebrum.
LO3

Describe a neuron showing what it consists of.

LO4 Examine the five cranial sensory nerves belonging to a different sense and identify the cranial nerves number four and ten.
LO5 Explain the difference between the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous systems.
 

Module 4 - The Circulatory System.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Analyse a brief outline of the Leukocytes.

Module 5 - Reasons for Fitness.

Module 6 - Understanding your Body.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Module 7 - Fitness Testing.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

LO2 Summarise the different types of simple fitness tests.
 

Module 8 - Principles of Training.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Discuss the training threshold giving examples of how this is measured.

LO2 Identify the effects of warming up on the body before exercising.

Summarise the following three methods of training:

  • Isotonic

  • Isometric

  • Isokinetic

LO4 Examine the suggested clothing for an athlete during weight training.
LO5 List the benefits of circuit training to the athlete.
 

Module 9 - Nutrition and Weight Control.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Module 10 - Fitness Instruction.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Discuss how you would carry out a Circuit Training Induction programme with your client.

 

Module 11 - Physiology of Stretching.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

Identify the following basic forms of stretching:

  • Static

  • Active

  • Ballistic

LO2 Discuss in detail how you would plan a stretching programme.
LO3 Evaluate how you would perform a calf stretch.
 

Module 12 - Home Medicine and First Aid.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

LO1 Discuss why practical training is essential in First Aid.
LO2 Identify steps to be taken in treating a person with the following injuries:
  • Poisoning
  • Sprains
LO3 Summarise the benefits of Acupressure.
