Learning Outcomes

 
Module 1 – Practice and the Legal System.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:
  Learning Outcome
LO1 Explain how the law is produced and practised
LO2   Identify what you should and should not be doing when using the law in social work practice
LO3   Identify legal dilemmas
LO4   Explain the need to make difficult decisions and be able to use a framework to enable you in the process of decision making
 
Module 2 – Children and Families.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:
  Learning Outcome
LO1 Describe the principles of the Children Act 1989
LO2   Give examples of how you will put these principles into practice
LO3   Be aware of other legislation when working with children and families.
LO4   Appreciate the need to deal with domestic violence as a problem in its own right
 
Module 3 – Children’s Act.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

LO1 Examine the general provisions for children in need
LO2   Summarise the Orders discussed in this unit
 
Module 4 – Young Offenders.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

LO1 Examine the legal knowledge you will need when working with young people in the criminal justice system
 
Module 5 – Community Care.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

LO1 Define “Community Care”
LO2   Summarise the benefits, entitlements and rights of people with a disability
LO3   Examine the extent to which community care legislation provides a blanket piece of law, rather than one specifically designed to meet the needs of older people
 
Module 6 – Mental Health.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:

LO1 Examine the main statutes in mental health law and their underlying philosophies
LO2   Review the rights mentally disordered people have to services and at the legal position around the need to give consent when any treatment is felt to be necessary
 
Module 7 – Community Care Practice.
On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:
  Learning Outcome
LO1 Explain the Single Assessment Process as arising from the National Service Framework for Older People
LO2   Explain how capacity is defined in criminal matters
LO3   Outline the law relating to the provision of services to older people
LO4   Describe how children with disability are regarded as children in need
